Background
I inherited my first camera at the age of 13. My interest in photography was pursued during school art lessons – unusual at the time – but I was persuaded to cut short formal artistic studies to concentrate on science which would ‘lead to a better career’…
…more than 30 years on, with a Physics degree and over 20 years experience at a Nuclear Power Station, the urge to create photographs never really went away; in fact it is stronger than ever!
Photographs
My images have always had a strong graphic quality and more than a leaning towards the abstract. My bodies of work to date are often concerned with bringing attention to ordinary objects and views and highlighting their visual nature – which may not have occurred to the viewer when they previously saw the subject.
I also use photography to explore issues and traits that I do not entirely understand. For example the patriotism associated with the Football world cup, or the tendency and need for people to write their own name everywhere they go.
Lately I have sought a less realistic, less objective view of the world. Does photography have to depict something clearly or can photographic images be about mood and feeling?
